Making the Documentary

This studio course is an introduction to contemporary documentary film practices and production. Students should learn the how to produce, direct, shoot, and edit documentary films. This course focuses on the creation of independent work with small teams and limited resources.

An introduction to documentary film history will be provided as well as an examination of contemporary trends. Production topics include lighting, sound, basic editing, and interview skills. Student work will be supported by demonstrations, screenings, discussions, and critique.

All students are required to provide their own video camera and have access to laptops with video editing software.

  • Hardware Requirements: Laptop (Mac or PC) with a minimum of 8GB storage, or an 8GB portable hard drive, and a video camera.
  • Software Requirements: Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.

Working with your OCAD U Account

As a student, you will receive an OCAD U user account, which will grant you access to the OCAD U learning management system, called Canvas. Your Canvas account will be enabled one week prior to the start date of your course. Login at canvas.ocadu.ca.
