Teaching English to Students of Other Languages courses

TESOL is an internationally-recognized industry certificate that many countries require for you to teach English internationally. The TESOL program is intended to provide students with the understanding and skills needed to effectively teach English to speakers of other languages and prepare them for their TESOL designation exam.

If you are a UNBC undergraduate student, completing the TESOL program at UNBC will earn you six credits toward your degree.

Not a UNBC student? That is OK. Earning your TESOL Certificate means you will still have the qualifications that many overseas employers look for when hiring English-speaking teachers.

This program covers all aspects of teaching English in classroom settings and is being offered virtually on Saturdays so you can continue to work or fit it into your school schedule.

The expectation is that students will participate in morning online lectures (9:30am - 12:30pm PST), during which time we will uncover the major TESOL methodologies and assessment practices. From 1:00pm - 4:30pm PST students will work on their own completing activities that will be evaluated by the professor and form part of the final course assessment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine the ten major methodologies in English language instruction
  • Analyze the rules of English grammar, including: parts of speech, verb tenses, and grammatical structures
  • Acquire lesson planning skills and classroom management strategies
  • Develop expertise in assessment and evaluation

Course Requirements

Standard requirements for teaching English abroad include a TESOL certificate and an undergraduate degree. While countries differ in specific certification requirements, up-to-date, internationally-approved training can be the final determining factor when it comes to job placement.

Course Prerequisites

Participants in this course must possess a minimum of a high school diploma (undergraduate degree preferred). Students must be proficient in academic English, and must demonstrate skill in language analysis and awareness. In order to register for this course, please refer to the TESOL registration form (link to form below) and follow the registration instructions on the reverse side of the form, then bring the form and payment in full, to Continuing Studies (5-308).

Materials & Supplies

Required textbook: "Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching" by Diane Larsen-Freeman and Marti Anderson, 3rd ed., 2011. This book is available for purchase at the UNBC Bookstore.

Required Equipment

Students must have a computer with webcam and a strong internet connection in order to attend and participate in class. Headsets are preferred.
