Coronavirus update: April 9, 2020 - 4:30 p.m.

April 9, 2020

Here we are, at the end of another semester of classes. To say that this semester, let alone this academic year, has been challenging would be an understatement. Yet our entire community, from students to faculty to staff, have responded exceptionally.

We have had to make challenging decisions over the past month in the rise of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. From moving to alternative modes of course delivery and assessment as to how we honour a graduating class that has faced unprecedented hurdles in their final year of studies, we have had to be nimble, creative, and responsive in our approach to stewarding our University.

While some of those decisions have caused stress or relief, happiness or anger, we have, as a community, worked through them together, guided by the spirit through which this very institution was created: knowledge and a belief that the North can offer distinctive leadership, ideas and solutions to the world, including during times of crisis.

I am very thankful for the feedback I have received as well in which many of you have connected with me over the past few weeks. Even when forced to make decisions that have been less than popular, responses have been constructive and respectful. Earlier today I revisited a decision, and I think we have some positive direction moving forward.

Although decisions are being made we are revising or revisiting decisions together, and that is the collaborative spirit that will lead UNBC towards a stronger future. Yes, we face extraordinary challenges, but given what I am seeing from our community now, I know we are well-equipped to address them, that we will be innovative in our thinking, supportive of one another, and that we will develop community-based approaches that will surpass even our own expectations.

I hope you have a moment over the coming long weekend to reflect, recharge and perhaps even relax, if only for a moment. Remember, no matter how difficult it may be, to adhere to recommendations from public health officials regarding physical distancing. Be well, check in on your friends, family and colleagues (virtually of course), and above all, stay safe!
