Abby Lodge has stepped into a new role at the Division of Medical Sciences (DMS) as Indigenous Coordinator. She was previously with the Northern Pathways to Health Care program at the DMS.

Abby will be focused on supporting Indigenous students enrolled in the Northern Medical Program, Master of Physical Therapy – North program and the Master of Occupational Therapy - North program. She will also support Indigenous recruitment/retention and community engagement for all three programs.

“This new position will provide needed support for our current Indigenous students in the North, including academic and cultural support,” says James Andrew, Associate Director, Indigenous Initiatives, UBC Faculty of Medicine. “The role will also help promote DMS programs through visits to high schools and Indigenous communities across the region. And the Faculty of Medicine and my office will continue to work with all other health professions to help increase Indigenous students and support.”

Abby is looking forward to making a difference for Indigenous students in the Division of Medical Sciences.

“I would like to create a community among the students from the three programs where everyone can support each other,” notes Abby. ““I hope to create a safe space for students to share their stories and experiences.

“I also would like to explore how we can retain students as mentors after graduation, as well as working with past students to mentor current classes in their career pathways.”
