The MEng program places an emphasis on creating experiential learning opportunities for our students.
By attending field trips throughout the school year, our students are able to build valuable industry connections and get a firsthand look at the applied uses of wood engineering.

Join Natalie, Senior Lab Instructor at UNBC, as she shows you the undergraduate engineering teaching resources at UNBC. The tour includes The Design Classroom, The Student Design Lounge as well as the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories.
Field Trip #1
Tour of primary and secondary wood product manufacturers, timber framers, and pre-fabricated home builders.
Past trips have included visits to companies such as Landmark, Structurlam, Western Archrib, Daizen Joinery, Mira Timber Frame, Winton Homes & Cottages, and West Fraser Plywood.
Field Trip #2
Our second field trip combines participation at the BC Wood Global Buyers Mission in Whistler, BC, with a tour of Fraser Wood Industries in Squamish and the BC Passive House in Pemberton. At the BC Wood Global Buyers Mission, students attend a series of talks and mini-seminars while networking with industry members and stakeholders.
International Wood Construction Conference
This is an optional field trip to the Conference/Forum-Holzbau International Wood Construction Conference in Innsbruck, Austria which occurs at the beginning of December.
Past students have each received a travel grant of $1,500 toward their attendance at the conference.
The International Wood Construction Conference provides architects, engineers, and builders with an opportunity to report on experiences, processes, and goals related to wood structures and construction. At the same time, the conference provides a chance for architects, building officials, builders, craftspeople, practitioners, and educators to learn about the latest industry developments and to exchange experiences.
Research & Internships
We offer research projects, internships, and post-doc opportunities in the fields of structural design, connections, seismic design, and building physics such as acoustics, thermo performance, and hydro dynamics.
