What is a Slow Book Club? Rather than reading a book a week, or a book a month, a slow book club reads a chapter or section a month and then meets to discuss. Student Life's Slow Book Club's first selection is Azar Nafisi's "Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books."
"Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids in Tehran, fundamentalists seized hold of the universities, and a blind censor stifled artistic expression, the girls in Azar Nafisi's living room risked removing their veils and immersed themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Student Life and the UNBC Women's Studies Program are making 20 copies of "Reading Lolita in Tehran" available for graduate and undergraduate students interested in participating. This selection was chosen to allow participants a glimpse into life in Iran to better understand and support members of the Iranian community studying and working at UNBC. We encourage all participants to share the books with their friends in the UNBC community.
Our books will arrive in early December to give everyone participating time to read the first section (or more) over the holiday break.
We will meet in the Learning Commons Event Space, room 05-140E, on the first floor of the Library between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on the following dates:
Thursday, January 19th - Section 1 "Lolita"
Thursday, February 9th - Section 2 "Gatsby"
Thursday, March 2nd - Section 3 "James"
Thursday, April 6th - Section 4 "Austen"
