Employee Giving

As UNBC employees, we work hard every day to help our students succeed. Giving is another way we show our support.

Payroll Deductions

Please consider signing up for payroll deductions. The tax credit is applied up front, reducing your income tax at the time of donating. In lieu of a charitable tax receipt, the gift will appear as a line on your T4 slip.

Employee Challenge

This annual event, held in November each year, provides an opportunity for UNBC faculty and staff to support as many UNBC students as possible. Last year, every gift made during the Challenge was matched! This doubled the impact of each and every gift.

Student and Alumni Giving

Together we can make a difference. Students are encouraged to get involved with student clubs and governance and support the fundraisers of your fellow students. Once you graduate and start your careers, we invite alumni to pay-it-forward by donating to a university priority area that means the most to you. Watch your email for opportunities to give and get involved.

Named Awards and Funds

There are many ways to support students, research and other priorities at UNBC by establishing a fund or student award that aligns your personal giving priorities with UNBC's.

Donor Named - Student Awards

At UNBC the total number of scholarships, bursaries and awards available to students continues to grow each and every year! Awards provide encouragement to students, often make a university degree achievable, support student success, and recognize excellence. Donors like you are influencing UNBC’s ability to attract and retain students from the region, and around the globe. Your gift can truly make a difference for years to come.

Scholarships reward students based on academic merit
Bursaries support students facing financial barriers
Awards are a blend between scholarships and bursaries

Here are a few giving options to choose from:

Annual Awards can be created for as little as $1,000 per year, and an initial commitment of three to five years. You can establish this type of award with criteria that reflects your passion and UNBC’s priorities. Funding can be provided on an annual basis or in one lump sum.

Endowed Awards can be established by a donor or group of donors and managed by UNBC with a commitment of contributing a minimum of $30,000 over the next few years. This type of award ensures that students become beneficiaries of your generosity each and every year — in perpetuity. This type of award is a great way to make an impact today, tomorrow and forever onwards! Funds must be held by UNBC for a minimum of one year before an award is disbursed from the endowment. This allows the principle investment to accumulate enough interest for the first student award.

UNBC students are incredibly appreciative of your support and are encouraged to provide a letter of appreciation so you can learn first-hand how you are changing their future. We would be very pleased to speak with you and learn about how we can facilitate your support of UNBC students.

Donor Named - Funds

Is supporting education a passion of yours? Do you or your company have a vested interest in educating students in a specific program to further develop their industry, healthcare or other skills? Consider making a contribution to establish an endowed program chair or area of research.

Major and Legacy Giving

Deferred and legacy giving supports the students of tomorrow and often allows you to have a bigger impact. With your gift, you can be a part of a powerful experience for future students, enhancing their capacity to make a difference in the world.

Real Estate and Personal Property

UNBC may be able to receive donations of real property, art work or other items of personal value. Pre-approved gifts are eligible for a charitable receipt for the fair market value of the donation. Inquire with us regarding any gifts-in-kind such as books, equipment, or other items that can support teaching and research at UNBC.

Gifts of Securities (Shares)

Gifts of publicly traded securities can be received by UNBC. These gifts provide the additional benefit of being exempt from capital gains tax. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the closing price of the day securities are received in UNBC’s account.

Planned or Legacy Giving

Planning today for a gift tomorrow will provide a meaningful and lasting impact that honours you and your family. Your gift has the potential to impact the future of the UNBC community and our students.

A planned gift can reduce tax obligations from your estate, leaving a greater legacy for your family and other charities. There are many ways to plan a gift:

• A bequest is a transfer of property through a will and can ensure your estate provides a specific contribution or a portion of its overall value to UNBC.
• You can name UNBC as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, or name UNBC as the owner of a policy. When you pay premiums for a policy owned by the university, you will receive a charitable tax receipt from us.
• Consider naming UNBC as a beneficiary of any pension plans or registered assets you may have.

All donors of planned or deferred gifts will be recognized in the UNBC Heritage Circle. You will be invited to our annual Donor Appreciation Evening and receive our This Is UNBC magazine twice a year to keep you informed.
