ITS Maintenance Digest - Week of November 14th to November 20th

ITS Maintenance/Information for this week:

This is your weekly digest of system maintenance/information and downtime.  All notices are also posted on the myUNBC Student Portal, our.unbc. ca for Employees, support.unbc.ca and on unbc.ca /its.  Please see one of these locations for maintenance notices.

System maintenance and downtime for the week is planned as follows:


The following services will be involved on:  Tuesday, November 16th  || Time: 10:30pm

Windows Workstation patching (all desktops and laptops running Windows)

  • Windows Workstation Patching - Important information regarding the release and install of Software Security Updates for UNBC Workstations
  • Security Updates are available to install from Tuesday, November 16th  at 12:30pm
  • Please follow restart instructions prior to the Thursday, November 18th  at 10:30pm, when restarts will occur automatically.

The following services will be involved on:  Wednesday, November 17th   || Time: 10:00pm – 4:00am

SharePoint Server Maintenance: All SharePoint sites require patching and will be unavailable

  • myUNBC - Student Portal
  • Please note that Learn/Blackboard and UNBC Online Services can still be accessed through unbc.ca/login
  • Our.unbc.ca
  • Bog.unbc.ca
  • Please note that this maintenance does not involve SharePoint Online (Teams/OneDrive) environments

The following services will be involved on: November 17th  || Time: 10:00pm – 4:00am

Palo Alto Change:  Updates to the firewall will require a complete Network outage of up to 1 hour 30 minutes.

During an outage of the Firewall the network is functionally offline. All access to UNBC resources will be unavailable.


The following services will be involved on:  Thursday, November 18th  || Time: 10:00pm – 4:00am

Windows Server Maintenance

  • All Windows Servers are impacted – FAST access may be intermittent during this window.

Linux Host Maintenance

  • All Linux hosts are impacted – Learn access may be intermittent during this window.

The following services will be involved on:  Thursday, November 18th || Time: 10:00pm – 4:00am

VMWare Virtual Desktop Recompose and maintenance for the ALL pools including:

  • Student Lab Pool
  • EMS Pool
  • Employee Desktop Pool

The following services will be involved on:  Monday, November 22nd || 8:00pm

ITS Information Notice – *Reminder* Regarding current workload and response times

ITS would like to thank everyone for using our new ITSM ticketing system called TeamDynamix.  Many knowledge base articles are now in place, to aide in solutions for common issues, and an increase in self-help ability for all.  This enables issues to be solved in a timely manner, by the customer, who can then carry on to get the job done with a solution in hand.

During the summer months ITS has an ever increasing workload, as many projects need to be completed by September.  While this workload continually increases, we still need to complete all the tickets coming in on a priority basis, as well as vacation time for our staff.  At this point in time, we have 2 service desk and 2 desktop support staff working hard to fulfill all the tickets and requests.

We wanted to let everyone know that each ticket, or request, is being prioritized as it comes in, and depending on the issue there may be a bit of a wait to complete it.  Please watch for updates to your tickets and assist us by replying with the information requested.
