Overview of Radiation Safety
Radioactive materials and radiation emitting devices are used for various teaching and research related purposes at UNBC. The use of radiation in laboratories is allowed under a license from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and administered by a combination of the Radiation Safety Committee and a Radiation Safety Officer.
Radiation Use and Hazards
UNBC pursues a stringent and conservative radiation safety program. Radioactive materials are limited to specific areas, and only trained, authorized users can access them. Personnel exposure monitoring is required for handling of detectable unsealed sources, and personnel exposure limits are kept less than one-fifth of those required by law. The risk of radiation exposure to staff, students, and the general public while at UNBC is extremely low.
Laboratory Authorization to Use Radioactive Materials
Only holders of an Internal Radioisotope Permit are allowed to possess, purchase, or use regulated radioactive materials or radiation emitting devices with the approval of the Radiation Safety Officer. Researchers who are interested in utilizing radioisotopes or radiation emitting devices need to submit an Internal Radioisotope Application to the Radiation Safety Committee review. This application needs to address applied, safety, and regulatory aspects of radiation use, and the Radiation Safety Officer can provide assistance in addressing each point. The Radiation Safety Committee may require specific changes to plan (e.g., location, monitoring, maximum quantities) or grant a probational permit.
