WBB: Early lead seals sweep for Cascades

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The UFV Cascades defeated the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night winning 85-51 during UNBC’s last home games of the season.  The Cascades advance to 12-7 while the Timberwolves fall to 2-16.

Celeste Dyck (Abbotsford, BC) was too much for UNBC’s guards to handle with 22 points and five steals. Sarah Wierks (Chilliwak, BC) and Kaitlyn Brink (Abbotsford, BC) followed their stellar Friday night performance with an equally effective Saturday game. Wierks had 19 points and 10 rebounds while Brink finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Timberwolves’ effort was lead by rookie guard Eleni Steriopoulou (Athens, GRE) who finished with 12 points shooting 4-6 from the field. Fifth year guard Sarah Robin (Prince Rupert, BC) closed out the last home game of her career with a 10-point night.

The Cascades started strong with Celeste Dyck having a perfect first quarter to total 12 points. The Timberwolves were plagued by turnovers which translated to 10 points for the Cascades. Fifth year forward Sarah Robin was able to keep the Twolves alive with a six-point quarter.

The Timberwolves evened the playing field in the second quarter but still struggled to make up the ground they lost in the first 10 minutes. Eleni Steriopoulou was 2-2 from the three helping to bring her team within single digits of the Cascades. At half the Timberwolves trailed 42-26.

Both teams continued pace in the second half with Sarah Wierks coming alive for the Cascades. Wierks led her team in second half scoring with 12 points. The Timberwolves kept up with the Cascades but could not overcome the first half deficit. At the final whistle the Timberwolves finished 85-51 behind the Cascades.

Even though the Timberwolves did not come away with a win a crowd of over 600 gave graduating players Kellieanne Fluit (Lynden, WA) and Sarah Robin (Prince Rupert, BC) a great send off. Both young women and the Timebrwolves have one more set of games to close out the season next weekend. The Timberwolves will travel to UBC Okanagan to play the Heat Thursday, February 12 and Friday, February 13.

The UFV Cascades will return home to host the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack next weekend in the final games of the regular season.
