President's statement regarding Ukraine invasion

February 24, 2022

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the University of Northern British Columbia, I am alarmed and deeply troubled by the events unfolding in Eastern Europe.

We join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, B.C. Premier John Horgan and the international community in calling for de-escalation, an immediate end to the armed conflict, and a return to diplomatic efforts to resolve differences.

We recognize that Russia’s deplorable attacks on Ukraine will have direct and indirect impacts on many members of the UNBC community. We will work to ensure supports are in place for those who need them and will continue to evaluate the situation.

International students in need of support can reach out to the International Office at ie@unbc.ca or at 250-960-5858. Additional student counselling supports are detailed on the Counselling Services website.

Faculty and staff supports are available through UNBC’s Employee and Family Assistance Program.

The UNBC community has a long history of supporting one another in times of crisis. Please be kind to one another, be thoughtful of others, and if you notice a friend or a colleague is having a difficult time, be sure to offer what assistance you can.

Thank you, and stay safe.

Geoff Payne
President and Vice Chancellor (Interim)
