SSHRC SIG Explore and Exchange Grants

Deadline: March 25, 2024

Through its SSHRC Institutional Grants (SIG) funding opportunity, SSHRC provides grants to eligible Canadian postsecondary institutions. These grants allow the institutions to fund, through their own merit review processes, small-scale research and research-related activities by their faculty and students in the social sciences and humanities. UNBC is currently accepting applications for SSHRC SIG Explore and Exchange Grants from eligible researchers.

Funding guidelines

  • Grant requests may not exceed $7,000.
  • Duration of grants will be 11 months. Funding will begin May 1, 2024 and must be spent by March 31, 2025.
  • Subject matter of the project or activity must be consistent with SSHRC’s mandate. Information on subject matter eligibility can be found here.
  • Grant recipients can only hold one SIG-funded grant at a time for the same project/activity.
  • Grant recipients must acknowledge SSHRC support for their research (SSHRC Explore Grant) or research dissemination (SSHRC Exchange Grant) activities.

SSHRC Explore Grants

  • support social sciences and humanities researchers with modest research funding requirements at any stage of their career;
  • allow for small-scale innovation and experimentation by providing funding to develop a research project or to conduct pilot work; and
  • enable researchers to hire students at any level to participate in their research projects, thereby contributing to the students’ professional development.

SSHRC Exchange Grants

  • support the organization of small-scale knowledge mobilization activities, such as workshops and seminars, in order to encourage collaboration and the dissemination of research results both within and beyond the academic community; and
  • allow researchers to attend or present their research at scholarly conferences and other dissemination venues that align with SSHRC’s mandate to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results at the national and international level.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be affiliated with UNBC and must maintain such an affiliation for the duration of the grant period. Researchers who maintain an affiliation with a Canadian postsecondary institution, but whose primary affiliation is with a non-Canadian institution, are not eligible to hold SIG-funded grants.
  • Postdoctoral researchers affiliated with UNBC (provided they maintain their affiliation with UNBC for the duration of the grant period) are also eligible to apply.
  • Students are not eligible to hold SIG-funded grants; however, SSHRC encourages researchers to employ students in SIG-funded research.

All applications must be submitted online via the Romeo Research Portal using the SSHRC SIG Explore/Exchange Grants Romeo form.

Now applications from Canadian researchers and innovators will be reviewed as fully-fledged members of consortia in Horizon Europe Pillar 2 calls. While Canadians can participate in all Horizon Europe calls that are open to international partners, as an associated country, Canadians can access a broader range of research opportunities in Pillar 2.  Most Horizon Europe Pillar 2 projects require at least three partners from three different EU member states or associated countries.

Each programme within Horizon Europe launches project calls based on a pre-established work programme under each thematic area. See the below funding description for a link to a list of funding opportunities and deadlines.
