Dr. Fredeen began his post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan (Soil Science - 1983), followed by a Ph.D. at U.C., Berkeley (Plant and Soil Biology - 1988), followed by postdoctoral research at the Carnegie Institution of Washington - Plant Biology on the Stanford University campus (1989-1994). He has been at UNBC since 1994, teaching mostly in the plant biology (BIOL304: Plants, Society and Environment, and BIOL404: Plant Ecology) and sustainability (ENVS/INTS 225: Global Environmental Change and Global Sustainability) realms. Dr. Fredeen is also the Director of the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute (NRESi) at UNBC.
Research and Expertise
His primary research interests include the measurement of forest carbon stocks and storage as well as CO2 fluxes into and out of forests in central British Columbia using stable isotope, Bowen Ratio, Eddy Covariance and leaf-level gas-exchange approaches. His other research interests include ecophysiology of sub-boreal conifer forests, lichen diversity and physiology, and carnivorous and mixotrophic plant function.Areas of Expertise:
