Biography

Dr. Shultis' research interests focus on the historical and contemporary socio-cultural forces affecting protected areas and wilderness, parks planning and management, outdoor recreation, conservation science, resource-based tourism, and the psychological dimensions of recreation and tourism.

Research and Expertise

Examples of his recent research include the impacts of neoconservatism and neoliberalism on protected area management and conservation, the impacts of technology of the wilderness experience, the role of the 'risk society' on outdoor recreation and resource-based tourism, park agency responses to declining park visitation, and the effects of the recreational use of protected areas on individuals and society.
