Students seek reliable solutions for opioid drug tests

The growing number of deaths from opioid drug overdoses has become a national concern.

The University of Northern B.C.’s Northern BC iGEM team, comprised of undergraduate science and business students is tackling the crisis through a different lens.

Since January, they have been working on creating a more reliable test for recreational drugs to determine if they contain fentanyl or other opioids using synthetic biology.

Pathway for health-care education in the North

For students with dreams of a career in health care but who face financial challenges, the road to becoming a doctor, physiotherapist or other health professional can be very difficult, if not impossible.

With your help, the Northern Medical Programs Trust has created the Northern Pathways to Medicine Bursary Program (NP2M) for high school students with a demonstrated financial need. The program includes a bursary to provide monetary support to northern students enrolling at UNBC who are interested in a health care career.

The support from donors is so instrumental in the success of UNBC student-athletes, says Emily Aase, who spent five years on the women’s basketball team as a student-athlete.

“Their continued support on and off the court made my university experience so memorable, and created further opportunities to achieve my goals,” she said. “I am thankful for donor’s selfless contributions to me, this program, and I know we are all looking forward to following in their footsteps by giving back to UNBC and the community.”

This included an understanding of women and girls who experience gender-based violence and how communities are focused on reducing child marriages and teen pregnancies.
