The University of Northern British Columbia’s Men’s Soccer team has bolstered its backline, officially announcing the commitment of defender Dino Hronopoulos for the 2019-2020 Canada West season. The 18-year-old says the chance to play soccer at the highest level in Canada is a dream come true.

“It is awesome. I am super excited. The team is great, the school is awesome, and it is good to be here. Steve (Simonson) is very different from all my past coaches. He is very calm, as of right now at least. He seems like a great coach.”

The Edmonton native is a product of the Scottish United Club and Inter Soccer Club. He visited UNBC’s Prince George campus in the spring, where he had a chance to train alongside the varsity team. He had been looking at a number of colleges and universities to continue his studies and athletics, but was urged to visit Prince George by UNBC’s Student Career Centre Coordinator, Maria Trujillo.

“My godmother Maria actually works at UNBC. She told me to come to the school, and I looked into it. I thought wow, this is a good school. The team is a great group of nice guys, and that was surprising, but I am so happy.”

The Timberwolves graduated a number of key contributors to their defense in 2018, ushering in a new crop of young defenders this season. UNBC coach Steve Simonson hopes the six-foot Hronopoulos continues his progression, and forecasts his newest recruit has a bright future in green and gold.

“We lost several defenders from our program, so the timing for Dino to join UNBC is perfect. He has a very strong commitment to his development as a player, and he is already showing great growth. He is a solid defensive presence with a good understanding of the game. I really look forward to working with him.”

Hronopoulos graduated from Harry Ainlay School and will enroll in general arts at UNBC in hopes of becoming a P.E. teacher. The Timberwolves are in the midst of preseason play, and begin the regular season schedule August 23rd at UFV.

“They can expect some nice long balls, and some great slide tackles. I love getting wins, and that feeling when someone on your team scores a goal. I really hope to make this school even better.”
