The University of Northern British Columbia Men’s soccer team has bolstered its goalkeeping corps, officially announcing the commitment of Daniel Zadravec for the 2018-2019 season.

For the native of Victoria, B.C., the commitment to the Timberwolves is the culmination of a lifetime of hard work.

“I have been playing soccer since I was five-years-old. I’ve always loved the game. The excitement and thrill of it. I look forward to continuing that love at UNBC.”

Zadravec visited the UNBC campus in the winter, where he had the chance to train with the Timberwolves and learn from head coach Steve Simonson. The 17-year-old cites that visit as crucial in his decision to commit to the TWolves.

“I’ve had the opportunity to visit the school, and train with the team and Coach Steve. I have heard excellent things from many people, and I am very excited to play under him next year. The team is a bunch of great guys, and I am looking forward to it.”

At six-foot-two, Zadravec has the ideal size to influence a Canada West match from the back end. A product of the Vancouver Island Wave program, he is confident he can make the transition to competing with the top schools in the country.

“I think I will bring a strong, technical shot-stopper and cross-taker, as well as a presence in the back. I am looking forward to being pushed by the team. I think the biggest challenge will be the speed and skill, but I look forward to that challenge.”

Currently competing in Division 1 of the Vancouver Island Soccer League, Zadravec is one of the youngest keepers at that level. Coach Simonson spoke to that experience as critical in his new recruit’s jump to the Canada West level.

“We are extremely happy to add a young goalkeeper of Daniel’s calibre. I believe this commitment helps solidify our goalkeeping situation for years to come. His time in the VISL will certainly help in his transition to the Canada West level.”

Set to graduate from Reynolds Secondary, Zadravec is a three-time recipient of the school’s Centre for Soccer Excellence Dedication Award. An honour roll student, he hopes to make an impact on the pitch, and in the classroom, during his time at UNBC.

“I am looking forward to attending UNBC next year. It is a nice-sized school and it has an excellent business program, which is what I was trying to find.”
