Canada West Men’s Soccer Preview

October 2nd, 2021 @ 12 PM

UNBC Timberwolves (0-3-3)
6th in West Division Standings
7 Goals For
12 Goals Against
Goals Leader: Owen Stewart: 2 Goals
Assists Leader: Kensho Ando: 3 Assists
Points Leader: Kensho Ando: 4 Points
Saves Leader: Daniel Zadravec: 39 Saves

Player to watch: Alex Nielson, M
A five-year Timberwolf, Alex Nielson is being rewarded for his skill and hard work by playing a major role for UNBC this season. A fleet-footed midfielder, the Prince George product is crucial in the TWolves’ defending and ensuring transition game, so he will be leaned upon against a Heat team that is perennially stingy and hard-checking.

UBCO Heat (0-1-3)
5th in West Division Standings
3 Goals For
4 Goals Against
Goals Leader: Aidan Tuck, Tega Ejumabone: 1 Goal
Assists Leader: Aaron Mulama, Malachi Emerson : 1 Assist
Points Leader: Tuck, Ejumabone, Mulama, Emerson: 1 Point
Saves Leader: Nicholas Reitsma: 14 Saves

Player to watch: Nicholas Reitsma, GK
In his sixth year with the Heat, goalkeeper Nicholas Reitsma has established himself as one of the steadiest netminders in the conference. A big body who covers a lot of ground, the Kelowna product has been his usual stingy self this season. The Timberwolves will need to test Reitsma and create havoc in the box if they want to beat him.

Quotes:
UNBC’s Hussein Behery

On the approach with six games to go in the CW season…

“I think the mindset is to get as many points as we can. I think we got a little bit unlucky with our own results, but I think we got lucky with some other games results. Many teams are drawing and dropping points as well, so we are not as far off as people may think we are. Three weekends. Six games. It’s time to get as many points as we can.”

On keys to the matchup with the Heat…

“The key is to play a good game for 90 minutes. That’s one thing we haven’t been doing great. We have had moments in games; thirty minutes and then we drop off, thirty minutes and then we drop off. I think the key is to play a good game and follow the plan for 90 minutes straight.”

On expectations this weekend…

“I expect them to give us a hard fight, but I also expect us to give them a harder fight. I think, with the mindset and confidence we got from those final seven minutes vs UBC, we are ready to beat any team we play against.”
