The University of Northern British Columbia Women’s Basketball team has added another fresh face for the 2020-2021 Canada West season, officially announcing the commitment of six-foot forward Maggie Mowser to the program.

“It’s really exciting. I have put in a lot of hard work, so it is really rewarding for me to get to see that pay off. I am ready to get started. For me to get here, I have had to work very hard. I have put in a lot of hours in the gym, training outside of team practices, trying to develop my fundamental skills. Also, strength training, to prepare myself for the physicality of post-secondary.”

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Mowser wasn’t able to visit UNBC’s Prince George campus and train alongside the TWolves. However, through conversations with Timberwolves head coach Sergey Shchepotkin and assistant coach Mark Johnson, the 17-year-old knew Northern British Columbia was the place for her to continue her hardcourt career.

“I felt like they are a good, competitive team. They have a good record. Their coaches are good at developing players and making them better. They are versatile, and I felt like I could fit in and have something to contribute to the team.”

The Calgary product trains with Genesis Basketball, under coaches Lissette Arevalo and Eddie Richardson. At the university level, it is crucial to be able to do many different things on the court, so Mowser has been hard at work.

“I am a really versatile player. I can score inside and finish in the post in all sorts of ways. I can drive and shoot, but I am also a team player. I am good at finding what the best play is for the team, rather than just the best play for myself.”

Shchepotkin’s team graduated all-time leading scorer Maria Mongomo and starting guard Emily Holmes in 2020, while Madison Landry and Emma vanBruinessen head into their final UNBC season this year. The TWolves’ bench boss sees his newest recruit as a tantalizing package of projection and passion.

“We are excited to add someone with Maggie’s potential and dedication to our program. She obviously has great size, but she has shown she has the ability to play under the basket or step outside and stretch defenses. We believe if Maggie continues to work, she is someone who projects as a player who will help us on offense, defense, and on the boards. I am happy she chose UNBC.”

A long, lean athlete with an affinity for the boards, Mowser knows her six-foot frame won’t stand out quite as drastically at the U SPORTS level. As the captain of her Genesis club team, she has displayed the maturity and leadership that will serve her well in the transition to university ball.

“It is a high level. I definitely expect it to be hard and challenging, but I think I am really going to enjoy it. I am looking forward to getting better and improving my physical game, but also my mental game.”

Mowser, who graduated from Centennial High School in June, plans to pursue Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UNBC. She will join her teammates this Fall in Prince George, and is ready to continue to play the game she grew up dreaming about.

“I have just always loved basketball. My dad, my brother, and my sister all play too. It’s a family game for me. I really love the physicality of it, and that it is always challenging me and pushing me to get better and learn something new.”
