Dr. Olson was invited to explore the cancer journey in Haida Gwaii, with a specific focus to explore differences between First Nations and the general population. Supported by research grants from the Vancouver Foundation and the Canada Breast Cancer Foundation, in partnership with community health care providers, Dr. Olson’s team merged data from Northern Health and the BC Cancer Agency to identify barriers and bottlenecks to care. Secondarily, we explored the differences in cancer incidence between First Nations and general populations. Lastly we explored potential differences in survival outcomes, which will be discussed. From this research, several recommendations to improve the cancer care journey will be proposed, which may be applicable to other rural and remote communities across Canada.
