Timberwolves fall to Heat in home opener

Amedee Cimana vs UBCO sept 6

Prince George, BC - The UBC Okanagan Heat downed the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team in their Canada West soccer debut Saturday afternoon at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Fields. The Timberwolves fell to the visiting Heat 2-0.

Jorden Leib (Bellingham, WA) was a stand-out player for the Heat. The fourth year midfielder racked in an assist and a goal in his season opener win. Leib's goal was the second for the Heat, the first came from rookie Cole Kingzett (Penticton, BC).

Heading into the second half both teams were tied 0-0, UBCO would be the ones to get on the board in the 53rd minute. The Timberwolves were on a counter attack but lost the ball, giving Jorden Leib the space to set up Kingzett. With UNBC out numbered defensively Leib played the ball into Kingzett who netted his first Canada West goal putting the Heat on the board 1-0.

Exactly 20 minutes later Leib would score one for himself. A long throw in from Joe Gill (Abbotsford, BC) was tipped by Austin Jones (Vernon, BC) directly to Leib. Leib, open six yards out, finished by sending the ball just past the outstretched fingers of the Timberwolves' keeper. In the 73rd minute the Heat saw themselves with a 2-0 heading towards their first win of season.

With only 17 minutes to play the Timberwolves pushed the pace of the game, sending long balls overtop to their forwards, looking for scoring opportunities. In the last few minutes of play it looked like UNBC's game plan was going to pay off when forward Cheona Edzerza (Prince George, BC) took a a crack from the right corner of the box but hit the cross bar.

At the final whistle the UBC Okanagan Heat took away a 2-0 win in their Canada West debut against the UNBC Timberwolves. Both teams will return again tomorrow for a rematch, kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
