WBB: Timberwolves upset Cougars

Calgary — Despite high fouls, the UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team were able to take a game by the score of 63-56 against the Mount Royal University Cougars on their home court for their second win of the year.

Hot off a 20-point game the night before, Cougars' guard Desiree Oakley continued where she left off, recording 13 points including a trio of three-pointers. The Timberwolves, who struggled securing the ball last night, again couldn't get by the Mount Royal defense early on, losing the ball several times in the first few minutes. UNBC would calm down and begin to chip away at the Cougars lead and trailed 19-18 after one.

In the second, the Timberwolves went on an 11-4 run to hold a six point lead midway through the quarter. Sarah Robin really started to heat up, recording 10 points to lead her team. Jayla Verney put up six points and the Cougars fought back to tie the score. With just seconds left on the clock, Okotoks native Kylie Pozniak got a buzzer-beater to fall, giving the Timberwolves a 34-32 lead at the half.

As the game continued, so did the physicality, and both teams found themselves in foul trouble. The Timberwolves held their lead that they built after the first half, and two big three-pointers by Stacey Graham helped that cause. Verney and Melissa Moore both had four points for the Cougars.
Jasprit Nijjar entered the fourth quarter just one foul away from fouling out, but she was able to play within the rules and excel, adding a quarter-high six points, including two late free throws that put a dagger in the game. With just over a minute left, Mount Royal trailed 60-56, but missed their chance to make it a one-possession game. Then, after two missed free throws by UNBC, they had another chance but again couldn't sink a basket. The Timberwolves successfully closed out the game with a late steal and some free throws to win 63-56.

Although Oakley had 13 first quarter points, she only added one for the rest of the game, finishing with 14. Verney and Moore had 14 and 12, respectively.
For the Timberwolves, Robin had 16 points, while Nijjar recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Vasiliki Loukas added her own double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Timberwolves get their second win of the campaign and move to 2-12, while the Cougars' playoff hopes are dealt a big blow as they move to 5-9. Mount Royal wins the season series 3-1. Next week, the Cougars host the University of the Fraser Valley, who are currently holding the final playoff spot in the Explorer Division. While the Timberwolves host the MacEwan University Griffins.
