Jocelyn Foidart, MSW, RSW:  “Change happens when we do the work differently”

“I am honored to have the opportunity to present to Northern FIRE. In this presentation, I will delve into the intersection of social work, law enforcement, and community initiatives. Drawing on my experience coordinating the Smithers Situation Table, I will discuss the innovative model that brings together professionals from Indigenous organizations, justice, health, and social services to proactively address public safety issues to minimize the need for police involvement. This collaborative effort emphasizes the importance of shifting responsibilities away from the police to more appropriate agencies, fostering a holistic and community-driven approach. Together, we will delve into the effects of integrating social work principles into policing, and I'll illustrate this through examples of community initiatives shaped by this perspective. Additionally, we will address the challenges associated with doing the work differently, recognizing the complexities and barriers that arise when trying to change the system. I look forward to engaging in insightful discussions.”- Jocelyn Foidart

The seminar will take place from 6 PM–730 PM on Tuesday March 19 2024. Join us in the UNBC Senate Chambers at the Prince George campus to enjoy wine, cheese, and an important discussion.
