Prince George City Council Endorses Northern Sport Centre Proposal
June 23, 2003 For Immediate
Release
The Council of the City of Prince George voted unanimously tonight to
endorse the proposal for the Northern Sport Centre as the City's single
Olympic legacy project.
The Centre, targeted for construction at the University of Northern British
Columbia's Prince George campus, would serve the training needs of many
of the regions top athletes, while providing critically important recreational
space for UNBC students and the broader community.
Building on a variety of local attributes - geography and climate, internatinal
winter city links, educational providers, transportation infrastructure,
the Northern Medical Program, etc - the Northern Sport Centre is aiming
to establish Prince George as a major sport development centre in key
sports such as cross-country skiing, biathlon, and basketball.
The cost of the Northern Sport Centre is estimated to be in the $15 to
$20 million range, although details about the facility and the services
it will provide are still being determined. For more information about
the Northern Sport Centre and the presentation to City Council, visit
the NSC web page.
