New Northwest Regional Chair

September 9, 1997 For Immediate Release

Dr Marian Scholtmeijer has been appointed UNBC's new Regional Chair for the Northwest region, taking over for one year from Dr Margaret Anderson, who is currently on sabbatical. Dr Scholtmeijer has lived in Terrace for two years, during which time she has taught English courses for UNBC, and in English and First Nations Studies for Wilp Wilxo'oskwhl Nisga'a in New Aiyansh. She received her PhD in 1990 from Simon Fraser University. She has written articles for the forthcoming encyclopedia, The Literature of Nature, and for Environmental Ethics.

While on her sabbatical, Dr Anderson is working to develop a multi-media, computer-based publication/teaching/research archive for the study of Tsimshian culture. The project includes compiling field research by various scholars over the past 50 years. The result will be a set of linked, multi-media resources of value to researchers, Tsimshian communities, and students.

The Regional Chair is the main academic and administrative position for UNBC in each of the three regions: Northwest, Peace River - Liard, and South-Central. In addition to helping develop courses for regional delivery, the Regional Chair also provides student services and works with community representatives to identify areas of educational need.
