Prince George and Victoria share top spot in BC for the number of people taking university-level courses in the community as a percentage of the population.

The participation statistics were obtained by taking college and university academic enrolment figures and dividing them by the population of the City. The results are as follows:

  • Prince George: 6% (4510 - at UNBC & College of New Caledonia - of 75,150)
  • Victoria: 6% (19,122 - at UVic & Camosun College - of 317,989)
  • Kelowna: 5.3% (4,732 - at Okanagan University College - of 89,442)
  • Kamloops: 5.1% (3,934 - at University College of the Cariboo - of 76,394)
  • Greater Vancouver: 3.8% (69,442 - at SFU, UBC, BCIT, Capilano College, Douglas College, Kwantlen College, Langara College, and VCC - of 1,831,665)

The enrolment figures were obtained from the Ministry of Education, Skills and Training. The population figures are from the 1996 census.

UNBC currently has an enrolment of just over 3000 students - half of whom are from northern BC. The enrolment has, in fact, more than doubled since UNBC's official opening in 1994.
