New Health Science Degree Created

January 30, 2006
Starting this fall, and pending final approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education, the University of Northern British Columbia will begin offering a new bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences that will enhance UNBC’s growing number of academic programs  that focus on health and human development.
The new program will have three majors: Biomedical Studies, Environmental Health, and Aboriginal and Rural Health. All majors build from a foundation of new health science courses, drawing upon existing courses from the sciences and social sciences to provide students with a broad understanding of issues while preparing them for further studies in areas as diverse as medicine, occupational therapy, speech pathology, healthcare management and administration, and community and public health.

“The versatility of this program is one of its defining characteristics,” says Howard Brunt, UNBC Vice-President Academic and Provost. “In addition to being a comprehensive degree program, it contains the pre-requisites that students will need for careers in many health-related fields that require a master’s degree or PhD. We have worked closely with health service providers from across the province to ensure that this program will contribute to health services in our region while opening the door for students to multiple career paths.”

The Bachelor of Health Sciences is the most recent addition to UNBC’s growing opportunities for education in health-related disciplines. Other programs added in recent years have included master’s degrees in Disability Management and Nurse Practitioner; undergraduate programs in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Aboriginal Health Sciences; and the Northern Medical Program. The Nursing program has also doubled its intake of students since 2000, adding programs in Quesnel and Terrace.  In terms of future program development, UNBC is partnering with the Colleges and Northern Health on federally funded research to assess the North’s emerging training and education needs for health professionals.

The application deadline for students interested in the Bachelor of Health Sciences is March 15th. For further information on the Program or the application process, call 250-960-5363.
