Gala for Charles Jago - May 26

Northern BC will pay tribute to one of its true champions later this
month, when a gala banquet will be held to recognize the contributions
of outgoing UNBC President Charles Jago.
The gala will be on May 26 at the CN Centre in Prince George. The event will begin with a reception at 7pm, followed by dinner and presentations by the colleagues, friends, and family of
Dr. Jago. Tickets are still available from the University. The ticket price is $100, with proceeds supporting the Northern Sport Centre. Attendees will receive a charitable tax receipt for $50.
Some facts about Charles Jago and his 11 years at UNBC
• He joined UNBC in 1995 to become UNBC’s third president, following Geoffrey Weller and George Pedersen. He came to Prince George from Ontario, where he was Principal of Huron College.
• With Dr. Jago as President, UNBC has grown from 2300 to 3600 students. UNBC is currently ranked by Maclean’s as the best small university in western Canada.
• Since 1995, the value of new construction on the Prince George campus has surpassed
$100 million. Currently, a Teaching & Learning Centre and the Northern Sport Centre are being built.
• During his presidency, regional access to programs has increased, with new campuses in Quesnel, Terrace, and Prince Rupert.
• UNBC has developed a successful fundraising program. Since 1995, the UNBC endowment fund has grown from $5 million to $41 million, supporting research and student awards.
Some Facts About the Northern Sport Centre
• The $30.7 million facility is the result of a partnership between the City of Prince George and UNBC. When complete, it will be 13,485 square metres (145,156 square feet).
• It will house a three-court gymnasium with seating for 2000, two indoor fields, a 280-metre indoor track, two squash courts, ten offices for coaches, physiotherapy and strength training facilities, and connection to the trail network on Cranbrook Hill.
• It is scheduled for completion by the Fall of 2007.
