UNBC Hosts Information Session for Prospective Students

May 8, 2006
UNBC will host its largest information session of the year tomorrow (May 9) for prospective students interested in starting courses with the University in the coming academic year.

The session will begin at 6:30pm in the Bentley Centre and people are invited to drop in until 8pm. There will be displays and presentations about student services, financial aid, Athletics, and various other services and degree programs. There will also be opportunities to apply and register for courses right on site.

“Registrations for September are currently up about 2% and we want to make sure that local people have the information they need to be able to take advantage of the programs and courses we’re offering,” says Paul Madak, Dean of Enrolment Management at UNBC. “A variety of University services and programs will be represented at the info session to ensure that prospective students get all of the information they need at one time and in one place.”

New developments at UNBC:
•    Students transferring to UNBC from a community college with an A- average or better are now eligible for a $750 scholarship when they register at UNBC. The award is available for students who transfer after completing the equivalent of one full year (minimum 30 credits) at college.

•    UNBC has an “interest only” category for students who may either want to take a single course for personal interest or try out the University before considering a full degree. The admission process is quicker for students applying under this category and hundreds of courses are available.

•    UNBC is developing northern BC’s first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in conjunction with the Emily Carr Institute. It’s expected that the program will begin in Fall 2007.

•    Construction of the Northern Sport Centre is now underway at the entrance to the UNBC campus. Sporting a gymnasium, indoor track, and two indoor fields, the facility will be complete in Fall 2007. A new Teaching & Learning Centre, providing additional space for a variety of degree programs including Business and Education, will be ready in Spring 2007.
