UNBC Hosts Mountain Pine Beetle Research Update

Natural Resources Canada and UNBC will be unveiling some research related to the mountain pine beetle during an event at UNBC on Thursday, August 24. The session will showcase some of the work being done to deal with the impacts of mountain pine beetle, and three new research reports dealing with the shelf life of mountain pine beetle-killed timber will be released.

In addition to research on the shelf-life of beetle-infected timber, presentations will cover manufacturing processes, hydrology effects, and ecosystem dynamics. A number of presentations will be given by Prince George-based researchers, including Ministry staff, UNBC faculty, and UNBC alumni.

The agenda and list of presenters is below.

The Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative is a six-year, $40-million federal program designed to mitigate impacts of the current epidemic and reduce the risk of future outbreaks. It is administered by Natural Resources Canada at the Canadian Forest Service in Victoria.
