Local Accountants Establish Student Awards

October 27, 2006
A new partnership between the University of Northern BC and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC is leading to an increased number of scholarships for students interested in becoming Chartered Accountants.

For the first time, the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation (CAEF) of BC is matching the contributions of individual firms that wish to establish student awards at UNBC. The partners of Chan Foucher Lefebvre Chartered Accountants – which has offices in Prince George, Vanderhoof, and Quesnel – are the first to participate in this program. The company’s contribution of $10,000 is being matched by the CAEF to create an endowment that will fund a new annual award for a UNBC Accounting student who is in his/her third or fourth year of studies.

The CAEF has also approved further matching up to a total of $30,000 until March 31, 2007, should other local or regional CA firms establish new awards for students at UNBC.

“To recognize this donation and the matching gift program, we hosted a reception recently to bring together local Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC, our business faculty, and students during an event at my home,” says UNBC President Don Cozzetto. “We hope that other local and regional CA firms take advantage of this matching program that CAEF has initiated. It provides a wonderful opportunity for employers to link with top students who may end up becoming their employees after graduation.”

This year, UNBC is offering nearly 740 scholarships and bursaries worth $1.8 million. The majority of awards have been established by private donors.

The Bachelor of Commerce degree is the most popular credential at UNBC and the Accounting major is the single-largest (by enrolment) of any major at UNBC.
