The Hiring Process
The ASC accepts applications for tutoring positions on a continuing basis. Tutors are selected for a combination of skill, content knowledge, and interpersonal abilities. Once hired, new tutors receive specialized training, usually at the beginning of the fall semester. All applications are thoroughly reviewed and kept on-file, and applicants that are not hired are encouraged to re-apply as their educational experience increases.
Types of Tutoring Positions at the ASC
Writing tutors help students with a variety of needs, focusing primarily on academic writing skill development. Writing tutors meet with students on a 1-to-1 basis and may perform drop-in tutoring in Library Writing Centre.
Content tutors assist students to develop the skills they need to succeed in their course work. Content areas from most disciplines are represented at the ASC, but hiring capacity may change based on the amount of funding from each department. Contact the ASC to see if there is an opening in your specialty area.
The Study Skills tutors specialize in helping students to improve their GPA through concrete study strategies. The tutor administers the Learning and Study Skills Inventory (LASSI) and reviews student's academic habits. Based on the results, the tutor assists the student in the development of an action plan designed to improve study and learning strategies
Tutors are trained and receive certification through the International Tutoring Certification Program of the College Reading and Learning Association.
Being a tutor offers opportunities to reinforce your own core knowledge, interact with faculty and build your resume, and make a positive difference for others.
