Philosophy and Goals

1. UNBC Childcare Society believes that children, staff and families;

Are unique, each growing and learning at his or her own pace.  Each child shall be respected for their diverse personality, cultural background, and developmental level. Staff and families shall be respected for their diversity and cultural background.

2. UNBC Childcare Society believes that children learn best through play;

The environment shall be set up to enhance learning in all developmental areas, to challenge and motivate children through hands-on activities. Children will move freely, choosing activities according to their interest. 

3. UNBC Childcare Society believes that children, staff and families have a right to a physically safe, healthy and nurturing environment;

The centre shall provide a balance of indoor/outdoor activities. Snacks shall be based on the Canada Food Guide and a safe environment shall be maintained. Staff shall be warm, caring, individuals. Staff and families shall have on-going respectful communication.

4. UNBC Childcare Society believes that families:

• Have a right to take an active part in their child's day care/preschool experience

• Recognizing that each family is unique, the centre shall be a resource for parents, providing information and offering opportunities for support.

• The centre shall have an open door policy for parents, encouraging and welcoming their participation in centre activities

• Need ongoing support and encouragement

5. UNBC Childcare believes that centre staff will demonstrate a high standard of professionalism in the early childhood field;

Staff will participate in professional development activities and keep abreast of changes in the field. Staff will adhere to the Early Childhood Educators of BC (ECEBC) Code of Ethics.

6. UNBC Childcare Society believes that the childcare centres will function in partnership with the community;

Staff will provide opportunities for students to learn from excellent role models, with skilled supervision.

7. UNBC Childcare Society believes that one of the components of quality care for families is continuity;

• Siblings of children whose parents are UNBC students, staff or faculty will be given enrolment priority

• Enrolment priority is given to internally transferring children in the day care programs

8. UNBC Childcare Society believes that the Childcare Centre will function in partnership with UNBC in their endeavour to be Canada’s Green University;

UNBC Childcare Society has adopted a litter-less lunch and snack policy and encourages reusable containers to be packed by parents, and uses products with minimal packaging.

Staff will work with the children to include them in the recycling and composting process so that they learn about preserving our environment through hands on experience.
